Integrity

Integrity

Integrity is based on what that one person perceives another with integrity really means.  Each of us has our own set of values and beliefs and therefore defining ones’ character as having or lacking integrity is subjective.

With that said, however you define integrity, I believe we all can agree that determining ones’ having integrity relies mostly on them standing for something and then staying on purpose with whatever that something is.  When one sways from that purpose and behaves in a way that is no longer in alignment with what they previously stood for, they can become labeled as being out of integrity.

Have you heard – Do as I say, not as I do?  Prime example of someone who does not stay on purpose with what they stand for and believe in.  If they did, then the saying would be do as I say and as I do.  If you are a parent, this is crucial.  Parents are modeling behavior for their children.  Actions speak louder than words.  Children pick up on those subtle behaviors and ignore lip service.

The same holds true with adult relationships.  Work or personal, it doesn’t matter.  People are savvy and see right through smoke screens.  Some may not be sophisticated enough or have the confidence to call another on it but when people exhibit a lack of integrity, out goes the trust factor too.  You can’t trust someone who doesn’t do as they say.  What they are telling you is that they don’t believe what their own advice is, either.

In the Personal Development industry, when you are seeking help from a coach or mentor, it is important to interview and get to know the person who will be advising and guiding you through a process. Ask questions about how this has helped them.  Find out what their values and beliefs are so you can match yourself with someone who has similar values and beliefs as you.

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Utilize the Lesson Evaluation Form and evaluate yourself regarding your Integrity.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ What is one step you can take to increase your level of integrity? Write it down and take action.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Take Action! Looking for a change, determine where in your life that increasing your integrity will impact the world around you.

Information

Information

Information is crucial for everything. Can you think of an instance where you don’t need information?  It’s like going on a trip without a roadmap or through life without goals.  We need information to help us get from A to B and all points in between.

With the Internet, we have information almost instantaneously with a push of a button.  Do a search on any topic and there is flood of websites to tell you all about whatever you are searching for.  Sometimes the search is spot on and other times it is completely off base but the beauty is you can search again and again refining until you get it right.

text_connected_to_cloud_Information Gathering

With that, why are so many people still ill informed?  There has never been a time like now with access to so much information through our phones, homes, cars, cafés, libraries… even restaurants give free access.  And yet you hear people say the craziest things and have outlandish opinions based on no facts you are aware of.

This is partly due to the other form of information – the media.  The media has its own agenda and long gone are the days of unbiased news outlets.  But this isn’t about the media. It is about information and how to obtain useful information that is both accurate and proven to be true.

When it comes to personal development and growth, there are many people who claim to have the secrets to success.  And from appearances, they sure do look successful.  But their success may not equate to your definition of success so my advice to you is this:

Define what you think makes a person successful.  Not how to be successful.  Illustrate through words what a successful person is – from relationships to material goods.  However you define success.  And from that – match up those who claim success to see if they fit your description, which is based on your values and beliefs.  If they don’t, then pass on their advice.  If they do, then find out how you can work with them or someone associated with them to mentor you and help you to achieve success.

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Utilize the Lesson Evaluation Form and evaluate yourself on were you get information and how are you utilizing it. Determine if that information is advancing you or keeping you from achieving your goal.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ What is one step you can take to increase your level of awareness and utilization of information when it comes to those things you say you want? Write it down and take action.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Take Action! Write out what it will take, what information you need in order to achieve success.

As you read this, TODAYRIGHT NOW can be one of those DECISION POINTS. Today can be the day you discover your potential. Today can be the day you spread your wings and start SOARING! All it takes is DEFINING the VISION, DISCIPLINING the FOCUS and ACHIEVING POSITIVE LEGACY!

Growth

Growth

GrowthSelf-knowledge is key to achieving growth.  Adopting others’ definitions of success as our own is not a formula for growth.  Our beliefs have a huge impact on how we perceive success and how we move forward.  Our values and beliefs may not match those of people we think are successful and therefore we need to be aware of what is truly important to us to achieve success.

Societies are made up of many differing types of people, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.  Some types are more suited for particular tasks and by understanding this, we can open our minds to our own growth potential.

Diving deeper into differing types of people, we can appreciate those gifts each has and that appreciation and understanding empowers us with the knowledge of why people react in certain situations.  Better understanding our environment and each other, we can work together toward a common goal.

Balance within us is crucial to our growth.  We have strengths and weaknesses that require equal billing to increase our awareness and understanding.  This means that focusing only on strengths and ignoring weaknesses causes an imbalance.  Recognizing strengths and weaknesses, embracing them and then supplementing weaknesses with others’ strengths in a team effort is highly effective.

The importance to growth is to not hide behind weaknesses but to embrace them, strengthen them either through inner reflection or by supplementing them in a team environment.

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Utilize the Lesson Evaluation Form  and evaluate yourself regarding your awareness of your strengths and weaknesses.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Make a list of your weaknesses. For each weakness, decide if this is an area where you can improve, or if this is an area where you can solicit the assistance of others.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Make a list of your strengths. Determine if you are utilizing your strengths to move you forward. How effective are you applying your strengths to achieve your goals?

Gratitude

Gratitude

Being thankful everyday for what you have is a mind altering experience.  Try this quick and easy exercise every day.  Wake up and immediately say what you are grateful for.  It could be as simple as another day on earth.  Your feet touching the ground. The ability to breath… or get more involved – and be grateful for a specific person, condition, thing, whatever it is in your life that you are grateful for.

There are half full and half empty people on this planet.  The half full group has their glass filled with gratitude.  Gratitude is one of those emotions that can increase well-being and happiness among those who deliberately create it.  Gratitude can also increase energy, optimism and empathy; all characteristics of positive happy people.

Imagine being aware of all the good things that surround you.  Imagine how much easier it would be to handle diversity and opposition when you have this upbeat attitude?  Imagine having a purpose in life, an appreciation for those lives around you, and a willingness to take action to show your feeling of gratitude.

Those are the ingredients to a more fulfilled balanced life. Focus on the big and the small things to show your gratitude.  You will find that as you express this new attitude, you will emit a positive energy or aura that will attract into your life exactly what you need to proceed and succeed.

Gratitude is a state of mind that we all have access to.  It takes practice and with practice, it reaps great benefits.

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Utilize the Lesson Evaluation Form  and evaluate yourself regarding gratitude and assess where this might be stopping you!

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Determine where increasing your gratitude would improve your life and the life of others.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Take Action! Be GRATEFUL…….and remember to look at starting with yourself first!

Goals

 stick_figure_hang_from_text_11040-1

This is one of those topics that I could write about all day, every day.

Goal setting, goal achieving, goals, goals, goals!

We all have goals.  Each and every one of us. Some of us think we gave up a long time ago and don’t have any, but we do.  Every day we wake up with the goal to live another day.  Ok, maybe that is a stretch, but don’t we all have goals to some extent?  And why is it so important to have goals?

The most successful people on this planet didn’t wake up one day with an idea and a few minutes later after they got dressed became successful… No way.  They had an idea and they developed a plan.  Within that plan there were goals – some big, some little – some attainable, some way out there.

And each day, they worked at it – chipping away, having triumphs and failures along the way, but tweaking and re-evaluating and working toward goals. Goals!

We have had goals from the day we were born.  Sit up. Crawl. Walk. Talk. Feed ourselves. Dress ourselves. Express ourselves. Make friends. Learn. Communicate. Develop relationships. Learn a skill.  Get a job. Get married.  Have a family. Buy a car. Buy a house. Take a vacation…. Many of these things are milestones that we can only achieve with a plan of action and goal setting.

Goals are objectives that you intend to achieve. Goals are the benchmarking of an achievement. Going through life without goals is like getting in your car and driving aimlessly expecting to arrive at your destination without a clue how to get there.  If you had a roadmap or a GPS, you could have gotten there in a reasonable amount of time, but because you just drove and drove – maybe you will eventually get there – but at what cost?  How much time and energy did you waste because you didn’t take a couple minutes to punch in the destination in your GPS?

Moving through life without a roadmap and expecting to reach certain milestones haphazardly is certainly one way to go, but if you want to get somewhere quickly and with less energy and time, then set goals, work towards them and you will find yourself exactly where you wanted to be.

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Utilize the Lesson Evaluation Form and evaluate yourself regarding your goals and the status of them.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Are your goals written in the SMART model?

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Take Action! Put your plan together for the achievement of your goals.

Attitude

Attitude is the one thing all human beings have complete control of and yet many unknowingly choose a negative attitude.  If we understood the power of our own attitude in our lives, most of us would change it immediately.  How many times have you been told to change your attitude?  That is a common order from most parents and teachers!

Attitude is created by your thoughts, feelings and actions.  Your mind controls feelings and decides whether these feelings will be positive or negative through your thoughts.  Your body then follows these thoughts through actions and behaviors.  It sounds simplistic because it is.

Through our thoughts, we create an attitude.  This attitude is expressed based on how we internalize ideas.  Our mind and body move into a new vibration of conscious awareness known as feelings.  These feelings are then displayed through actions and behaviors that produce the results in our lives.

Attitude [Thoughts + Feelings + Actions] = Resultsstick_figure_drawing_checklist_800_clr_2328

Imagine feeding our minds with positive thoughts and flow through the process.  We will end with positive results.  Now imagine feeding our minds with negative thoughts and flow through the process.  Makes sense, doesn’t it?

By changing our thoughts, we can change our attitude, which will ultimately change our results.  Attitude is the creative cycle that allows us to feel a certain way and then take the necessary action to a specific result.

Start with the end in mind and make the decision that today is the day to change your attitude!

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Evaluate the results in your life.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Determine what your thoughts, feelings and actions are in relation to those results.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Determine if a change is needed……

Mastering Your Workflow

In the last post we talked about Getting Things Done (GTD) by David Allen. This is a 100% practical system. However, for this system to be 100% effective, you must know the benefits of having a personal mission statement, a set of defined values and principles that drive you, and a set of S.M.A.R.T. goals, defined and written down, in each of the growth areas of your life.

Putting GTD into action is what you do after you have all those in place.

You have a plan, now start working your plan! If you can master your plan, you will be well on your way to major productivity and achieving your goals!

Mastering the Workflow

Mastering Your Workflow

Collect ~ Capture everything, do a mind dump. This is everything that has your attention. Calendar items, to-do’s, projects, notebooks, emails, etc. I do this in Evernote.

Process ~ Empty your buckets by deciding what each item is and if it is actionable. If it is not, then you have three choices, Eliminate, or Incubate for possible use later, or file as Reference. If items are common or belong to a project, I will build this project in OmniFocus and start to define the end result along with the steps to accomplish the project.

Organize ~ Group the results of the Processing step into four key action categories:

  • Projects – activities that you have a commitment to finish.
  • Calendar – action that must occur on a specific date.
  • Next actions – items that must be done as soon as possible.
  • Waiting For  – items that you are waiting for others to do.

Review ~ Look at your calendar and actions daily (for me I check them once right before bed and then again upon starting work). Conduct a weekly review (I like to do mine Sunday evening before heading to bed). This allows me to get clear on what is coming up, gets me current on what has happened and allows me to use my dreams to be creative. The inbox gets emptied, the calendar gets populated and the projects get updated. The best part is the mind gets cleared!

DO – Make intelligent choices that align with your mission and purpose. Take actions based on what you must do, can do and what gives the greatest reward with the time possible. Remember your priorities and your purpose! Examine the value of doing task X vs. doing task Y.

Set a time to revisit you commitments at the appropriate intervals. As you progress these may change. I like to think of them as altitude.

  • Ground level ~ current actions, review daily
  • 10,000 feet ~ current projects, review weekly
  • 20,000 feet ~ current responsibilities, review monthly
  • 30,000 feet ~ 1-2 year goals, review quarterly
  • 40,000 feet ~ 3-5 year goals, review annually
  • 50,000 feet ~ career, purpose, lifestyle, review every 2-3 years

Remember, we are a product of our past choices, which means that our future is a product of our present choices…..Choose wisely!

Making your goal

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Examine if what you are doing is getting you where you want to be.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Think Big, Dream!

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Create systems to move you past that 92% of Americans that don’t make it past the 21 days’ mark with their resolutions and goals!

Organizing your Life for Success

images-2CONGRATULATIONS! You have set some goals and now are moving forward! The question now becomes how do you get organized for success?

This is a great question. With today’s demand on our time, managing the activities that take up our time becomes paramount in the achievement of our goals.

Remember, we did not get where we are overnight, and thus, we won’t get where we desire to be overnight either. In today’s Microwave, fast food type world, we expect instant gratification along with our instant rice!

I will refer you to Darren Hardy again and his great book The Compound Effect and also The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Both of these books talk about the small things done over time creates what we want.

Organization is one of my top goals on my list this year. In reviewing this last year’s events, I see where some of the areas where I have been least productive and most frustrated are where I am un-organized.

As I evaluated this issue, I saw two things: HOW and WHY. The WHY I addressed above. Additionally, as I learn more about the value of my time, I am learning the more I effectively utilize it, the more it is worth……….A Question: Do you know what your time is worth?

Then, we come to the HOW. If you do your research, you can find all the expert opinions on this. What I am going to explain is what I utilize and what is working for me. Please do your own, but find a way to organize your time.

ID-10072145

STEP ONE – Determine what your time is worth, per hour. This will then guide you in how you utilize TIME! Once I started to learn this I started to maximize how I was working.

STEP TWO – Use a SYSTEM! For me, I am a tech kind of guy. I do not like walking around with paper calendars or lists. For me, I needed something that I could access on my phone, IPad and computer; the three systems that I have evaluated and are now using.

John Maxwell talks about a system he uses called “The Rule of 5’s.” This is five things he does everyday that will move him towards success. His rule of 5’s for his writing are:

1. Every day he reads.
2. Every day he files ideas.
3. Every day he asks questions.
4. Every day he thinks.
5. Every day he writes.

John talks about this in his book “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth” Motivation gets you going – Discipline keeps you going. The rule of 5 is the discipline!

As I have designed my Rule of 5’s, I have found that organization is essential.

My system I use for the filing of ideas is Evernote. This web based organizer is a great tool across all devices. Being web based, I can access the information as needed. One of the best features of this program is that this information can be accessed by multiple users. For an example, my wife and I each have notebooks, but we also have joint notebooks that we can collaborate on projects or enhance notes and information.

The next system I use is called OmniFocus for Mac. This tools allows for the creation of notes and these can then be organized into projects. These projects can then be transferred to our calendar for reminders or deadlines.

The last system I use is called Getting Things Done GTD by David Allen. This is a 100% practical system. However, for this system to be 100% effective, you must know the benefits of having a personal mission statement, set of defined values and principles that drive you, and a set of S.M.A.R.T. goals defined and written down in each of the growth areas of your life.

Putting GTD into action is what you do after you have all those in place.

You have a plan, now start working your plan! If you can master your plan you will be well on your way to major productivity and achieving your goals!

Next post we will continue the discussion on Mastering your WorkFlow!

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Examine and define the value of your time, what is an hour of your time worth.

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Find a system that will work for you!

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Define your Rule of 5.

Starting the New Year Off on the Right Foot ~ Part Six Taking Action!

Ok….we are here…it is now time to take action! images-5

You have the right mindset……

You have the right attitude of gratitude…….

You have a great set of defined goals………..

What is next?

What is that factor that will have you achieving your goals? Excelling at what you set out to do? Living that life you have always wanted to live?

ID-100113124YOU!

That’s right, you and you alone, have the responsibility and the power to make this happen!

Not what you do, but who are you are being. Achieving our goals has everything to do with who we are and who we show up to be.

John Maxwell calls this the Law of the Lid. We will never achieve more than the level of our being.

This is all about personal growth, your influences and the way you think. Our beliefs also have a large part to play in the success of our goals. If our goal is to earn $150,000.00 a year, but we do not believe that we can do it, then chances are we won’t. We may DO all the steps needed to achieve this goal, but our limiting belief may hold us back, not consciously but subconsciously. Remember, I talked about all actions and behaviors come from the subconscious mind.

Evaluate what influences you have in your life. What are the books you are reading, the programs you watch or listen to, the people you surround yourself with. Studies show that we will earn an average of the 5 people we associate with. This also applies to actions and behaviors.

Remember the old saying….”Birds of a feather, flock together!”

Next: Set your plan in motion.

  • Define a timeline for each goal and break the goal down into small action steps. It has been shown that most people over estimate what they can do in the short term and underestimate what they can accomplish in the long term. Set both short term and long term timelines.
  • Remember the GPS, set the route. Here is where we start to define the how. If it is an income goal, what do you need to do to achieve the goal? Is it more sales, more customers, a different vocation or job, maybe an increase in education. Set the steps out in an order. I will talk about some systems that will help you in a later post.
  • Define what resources you need in order to accomplish your goals. People, places and things. Remember, the bigger the Dream, the Bigger the team that is needed. The best part about you achieving your goals is when you are also helping others achieve theirs. Find like minded people to support you in your quest.

Then GET GOING! Get into Action! Get into the game and stop sitting in the stands!images-6

Have a sense of urgency!

Remember, I talked about failing? Look at your goal and think about……..What would I do if I knew I would not fail? Then DO IT!

You see, failure is the only way we can test our plan, it is the only way we learn!

images-7We never would have learned balance if we had not fallen off the bicycle.

We can never pull ourselves to a higher level without falling.

Sometimes it is the Fear of success that really holds us back!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that frightens us!” ~ Marianne Williamson

ACTION STEP #1 ~ Get Going! Take one action step from your goals and take the step!

ACTION STEP #2 ~ Evaluate the results, remember not from a good or bad, but from effective or ineffective.

ACTION STEP #3 ~ Take the next step!
